Chapter 40: Exercising Structured Professional Judgement (SPJ)

In addition to hiring practices, this is a useful methodology for self assessment that can be applied to any tacit skill or soft-skill. You can think of it like a self-directed 360 degree interview. For illustration, let’s assume one is interested in developing active listening. The process would include the following steps, and would be scored as 0 (not present), 1 (partially present), or 2 (usually present).

 

The Exercise:

My ability to be an active listener in my professional role:

1. My self appraisal: (0, 1, 2)

2. Several co-workers anonymous score of my active listening: (0, 1, 2)

3. Several customers anonymous score of my active listening: (0, 1, 2)

\4. HR’s appraisal: (0, 1, 2)

5. Several trusted colleagues outside of your company/business: (0, 1, 2)

6. Several family members (0, 1, 2)

7. A trusted friend or friends who can be 100 % honest (0, 1, 2)
